For Founders

Our Ambition

By 2035 at least £50p per £1 of venture capital funding in climate tech is received by currently underrepresented founders.

The current state of affairs (a few numbers to remind us of the urgency behind what we’re doing):

  • For every £1 of venture capital (VC) investment in the UK, all-female founder teams get less than 1p, and mixed-gender teams 10p. At current rates, all-female teams reaching 10% of all deals will take more than 25 years (until 2045).

  • Extend Ventures found that through 2009-19 seed stage rounds, entrepreneurs perceived to be White within founding teams were invested in at rates of 87%, with a growing capture of investment through the stages. All other ethnicities took a declining position with Black (0.53% of later stage) and East Asian (1.46%) founders securing the smallest share.

  • Between 2009 and 2019, Black founders captured only 0.24% of venture funding vs their representation of 3.5% of the UK population; female founders captured only 11% of venture funding vs their representation of 51% of the population; and teams with an elite-educated founder captured 43% of venture funding vs less than 1% representation.

How we hope to get there

As a first step in this journey we are harnessing the power of peer learning and the magic of a solid support group. We regularly see the value founders bring to each other through sharing relevant connections and personal stories - not only the successes and wins, but also the challenges, pitfalls,
and learnings from overcoming these.

Our groups are kept small and close-knit thereby creating a space where founders are comfortable in being themselves - open, honest, and vulnerable. The peer groups are also made up of founders with similar diversity traits working in the same industries - to make it as relevant and useful as possible.

The Climate Mosaic community is intended to enable access to a support system for founders, on a journey that can sometimes be overwhelming. To this extent, our supporters and partners are also available as a sounding board and open to collaborating and helping founders on an individual basis. Our quarterly meetups bring together investors and founders in this community, to celebrate each and every one of you while also fostering meaningful connections.

Should you be interested in joining a peer group in your region please register here and we will reach out to you.
